Resident Artist Workshop (RAW)
As SAFEhouse's primary program, RAW residencies support approximately 100 emerging and established artists in the development of new works in contemporary dance, experimental theatre and interdisciplinary performance. RAW residencies provide artists 3-6 hours of rehearsal space for approximately 12 weeks, as well as mentorship, marketing, and production support for two nights of performance in shared showcases. The goal of the RAW residency program is to provide a consistent source of support for emerging and established artists to create and perform new work without the stress of self-producing. RAW requires 15 hours of volunteer service including training in tech and production. Since the program is free, artists can focus on investigation and development of their work.
SAFEhouse Arts encourages artists to consider participating for one year, beginning in November (applying by Oct 1) but also accepts applications throughout the year for shorter residencies.
Each RAW artist volunteers 15 hours per quarter, doing such tasks as cleaning, administration, house managing and all RAW artists are asked to provide production support at performances (running sound and lights). Volunteer hours must be complete before the residency. Training for running sound and lights is provided at the orientation during Community Day (see calendar).
Before each residency, artists participate in SAFEhouse Art's quarterly Community Day & Orientation, which includes a photo shoot for publicity, cleaning, meetings for Lead Artists and festivals and usually an artist reception or performance.
During their residency, RAW artists must complete online forms for publicity, provide information for printed programs and fill-out a technical sheet for their performance. All of these forms can be found under Current Artists on our RAW Artists page.
